About Theater Mitu

Founded in 1997, Theater Mitu has earned a wide reputation as an adventuresome and dynamic ensemble of artists. Under the leadership of artistic director Rubén Polendo, the Company is dedicated to transliterating a wide variety of performance traditions, exploring theatrical form and supporting the creative growth of its collaborators, who are at the creative core of each piece the company produces. Its considerable body of work has taken on a variety of forms: self-produced large scale theater pieces, developmental work with some of the world's leading theatrical innovators, productions and master classes in conjunction with universities and conservatories, outreach to non-theatrical communities and research and training with its members.

Theater Mitu's work has been developed and presented at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, The McCarter Theater in Princeton, The Perseverance in Alaska, The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, The Alliance in Atlanta, Patravadi Theater in Bangkok, UNAM in Mexico city, The Public Theater, Lincoln Center Theater, CSV, The Juilliard School, New York University, Playwrights Horizons Theater School, Bard College, The Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and New York Theatre Workshop. Theater Mitu is the Company-in-Residence at New York Theatre Workshop.

Theater Mitu's mission is to use the power of the theatrical to strengthen the soul of the community. We explore and transliterate ancient ritual and performance traditions to generate a vibrant theatrical vocabulary that we call Whole Theater. We define this as a theatrical experience whose form is rigorously visual, aural, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Whole Theater questions theatrical form and sets out to engage both audiences and artist in work that is dynamic, impactful and unignorable.
